Why your shellac isn't lasting – the 7 most common causes (and how to fix them immediately)

Updated: January 2026 | Reading time: 6 minutes

Quick check: If shellac lifts or chips after a few days, it's almost never due to the color – but rather preparation , layer thickness , capping or lamp .

Recommended setup for maximum durability

1) Inadequate nail preparation

Problem: Natural nail not properly mattified or degreased.
Solution: 180–240 grit, thoroughly remove cuticles, then no more water.

2) Primer is missing or incorrectly used

Solution: Apply primer thinly and precisely – especially on oily or problem nails.

3) Base coat too thick

Solution: Always apply the base coat extremely thinly and allow it to cure completely.

4) Paint layers too thick

Solution: Always use two thin layers instead of one thick one.

5) No capping

Solution: Apply base, color and finish neatly over the nail tip.

6) Incorrect finishing gel or incorrect cleaner

Problem: Loss of shine or lifting due to improper cleaning.
Solution: Remove the sticky layer only with a special cleaner.

👉 Use only NAILINO Cleaner – no alcohol, no nail polish remover.

7) UV/LED lamp too weak

Solution: At least 48–60 W, harden thumbs separately, adhere to the times.
